Jon Jones' Signature Kick May Face MMA Ban, Says Top Official
Jon Jones, known for his innovative fighting style in MMA, may see one of his signature techniques prohibited. The oblique kick, a move Jones frequently employed, is reportedly under review for a potential ban.
Following his retirement after a heavyweight title defense, Jones' career highlights include the effective use of oblique kicks. These strikes, targeting the opponent's knee, have led to significant injuries for several fighters in recent times.
Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, spoke on The Ariel Helwani Show about the risks associated with oblique kicks. He stated, "I think it’s time. I think that there are more risks than we should require our fighters to have to deal with to participate in mixed martial arts."
Foster elaborated on the severity of these injuries. "This is a kick that has a long healing time. It can really have a lifelong effect," he explained. "This kick, it got its name for that oblique ligament in the back of the knee. You essentially get the unhappy triad or whatever, as the doctors call it. You bust all of those ligaments at once if this thing lands right. Somebody could have a lifelong injury from this, that they’re gonna deal with way after this is over."
He believes the potential for severe, lasting damage outweighs the technique's utility. "It’s not worth it," Foster concluded. "I don’t think the public loses anything if this kick is banned. There’s plenty of other techniques if you’re using it for distance." Foster suggested that some fighters may intentionally use the kick to cause hyperextension and ligament damage to secure a win.
