Gennaro Gattuso has begun his work at Lazio, even though his official tenure is still several weeks away. Recent reports indicate that he is actively trying to persuade players like Gila and Alessio Romagnoli to commit to the club for the 2026-27 season.
Gattuso has reportedly reached an agreement for a two-year contract to succeed Maurizio Sarri as Lazio’s head coach. While the squad is currently on break or involved in international matches after the conclusion of the 2025-26 Serie A season, they are scheduled to return for pre-season training on July 13th.
Despite not yet being officially appointed, Gattuso is said to be diligently working on building relationships with his new players. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he is making efforts to convince certain individuals to remain with Lazio for the upcoming season.
Over the past few days, Gattuso has been in constant communication with Lazio players via phone. Reports suggest he is already receiving positive feedback from several key members of the squad.
Gattuso is already familiar with Mattia Zaccagni and Nicolò Rovella from their time together with the Italian national team. Furthermore, it’s been reported that he views Kenneth Taylor as a crucial component of Lazio’s future project.
La Gazzetta dello Sport points out that Gila and Romagnoli were considered the most likely players to depart Lazio this summer. However, following positive discussions with the incoming coach, their stance appears to have shifted, and they are “no longer as convinced” about leaving.
Gattuso has also engaged in conversations with Danilo Cataldi, Adam Marušić, and Patric, whom he regards as important leaders within the Lazio squad.
