Claudio Ranieri has indicated his readiness to join the Italian national team in any capacity, whether as a coach or a director. Previously, he declined such opportunities due to existing commitments. However, he now states, “I am free, so if called, you say yes.”
The former Roma director made these remarks at the Gianni Di Marzio Awards, speaking to Sky Sport Italia about his future after an extensive and notable career. Ranieri has previously announced his retirement twice and departed from his consultancy role at Roma following disagreements with coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
Speculation has arisen that Ranieri could be considered to help revive the fortunes of the Italian national team, which has failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups.
Ranieri Had Previous Opportunities with the Italian National Team
“I previously said no to Italy because I was already employed by Roma and couldn’t manage two roles,” Ranieri shared with Sky Sport Italia. “At this moment, I am available, so if an opportunity arises, why not? Never say never.”
When questioned about his preference for a coaching or directorial position, he responded, “I don’t know. When your country calls, you say yes, and that’s that.”
Ranieri is famously remembered for his Premier League title win with Leicester City a decade ago. However, ten years later, the Foxes have been relegated to the third tier of English football.
“Leicester was known as a ‘yo-yo club’ in England, moving between the top two divisions,” Ranieri observed. “It’s a shame they’ve dropped to the third tier. I will be visiting Leicester soon for the celebrations marking ten years since the Premier League title win, and the fans are keen to recreate that atmosphere.”
It has also been revealed that Enzo Maresca sought Ranieri’s advice for several of his coaching positions, including at Leicester City and Chelsea. Regarding what Maresca should do next, Ranieri commented, “Maresca is one of the most promising young coaches we have, and I hope he stays in England.”
