President Honors Artemis II Crew with Congressional Space Medal of Honor
President Donald J. Trump presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. This high honor was bestowed upon them for their exceptional service during the Artemis II mission. The ceremony took place at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, marking the first recipients of this prestigious award since 2023.
The groundbreaking Artemis II mission, which launched on April 1st and concluded with a safe splashdown on April 10th, saw the crew become the first to fly on NASA's Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft, named "Integrity." Their mission set a new distance record, traveling 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the 1970 Apollo 13 record. The crew's total flight distance, including a lunar flyby, reached 695,081 miles.
"Today, we honor the immense courage of four intrepid space heroes whose daring journey took them further from Earth than ever before," stated President Trump. He acknowledged the collective effort behind the mission's success, saluting the engineers, scientists, and specialists at NASA who contributed to this achievement.
Established by Congress in 1969, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor recognizes astronauts for exceptionally brave and meritorious efforts that contribute to the nation's and humanity's welfare. With the Artemis II crew, there are now 34 recipients of this award, including those honored posthumously.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman remarked, "President Trump's leadership has reignited America's space leadership. The Artemis II crew answered that call with extraordinary skill and courage, showcasing American leadership and exploration at its finest. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of the NASA workforce and our partners."
The Artemis II mission served as a crucial stepping stone for future Artemis missions, including the 2027 Artemis III test flight for rendezvous and docking simulations and the 2028 Artemis IV mission, which aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface.
Mission Commander Reid Wiseman expressed his gratitude, stating, "It was the honor of my lifetime to fly on Integrity around the Moon. Having President Trump here to honor our crew underscores the significance of our team's accomplishments. I look forward to seeing my colleagues continue this legacy on Artemis III."
Victor Glover, who served as the pilot, shared, "Piloting Orion for the first time was a profound honor, made possible by the hard work and expertise of countless individuals. We share this recognition with the thousands who launched us around the Moon and brought us safely home."
Mission Specialist Christina Koch added, "The global response to our mission exceeded our wildest hopes. We accept this award to honor everyone who made it happen, from the factory floors to mission control."
Jeremy Hansen, also a mission specialist, commented, "It is a privilege to receive this medal alongside my Artemis II crewmates. I share this honor with the dedicated teams in Canada, the United States, and our international partners. Artemis II demonstrated what we can achieve for humanity when we set ambitious goals and collaborate."
NASA's Artemis program is ushering in a new era of space exploration, with plans to establish a lunar base for long-term exploration and pave the way for future human missions to Mars.
