Ciryl Gane Calls Tom Aspinall 'Mentally Fragile' After Title Vacancy
Ciryl Gane, the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, has voiced his opinion on Tom Aspinall's recent decision to vacate the title, citing mental fragility.
Aspinall announced his decision to relinquish the UFC heavyweight title to focus on recovering from several eye injuries. He hasn't competed since a no-contest bout against Gane at UFC 321. Aspinall has faced ongoing issues stemming from eye pokes he sustained last year.
Following an interim title victory earlier this year, where he defeated Alex Pereira at UFC Freedom 250, Gane was elevated to undisputed champion by UFC officials.
During his injury-induced break, Aspinall has frequently referred to Gane as a 'cheater.' With Aspinall stepping aside, Gane has now responded to his former opponent's comments.
Speaking with Zack Nani TV, Gane shared his perspective on Aspinall's indefinite departure and his approach to recovery.
"We knew he was mentally fragile," Gane stated about Aspinall. "We suspected it. The man complains excessively. You were poked in the eyes; it's understandable to stop. If you experience pain, there's a problem. There was no need for the extensive communication, as it ultimately worked against you."
Gane added, "We saw the fingers; there was no need for all of that."
As of now, Aspinall has not publicly commented on Gane's remarks.
Gane is scheduled to make his first undisputed heavyweight title defense against Josh Hokit at UFC 334 later this year. Hokit secured his title shot with recent victories over Derrick Lewis and Curtis Blaydes.
