Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga Revives Super Nintendo RPG Classics for Modern Platforms
Taito and Clear River Games announced Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga will launch in 2027 for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, and PC via Steam. A physical edition is confirmed. This collection bundles the original two SNES RPGs. Taito states the games have been carefully adapted and enhanced for a contemporary experience, suggesting quality-of-life improvements.
Developed by Neverland, the initial Lufia titles form an interconnected narrative. Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (1993) and its prequel Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (1995) are included. The original game introduced an emotional saga centered on the catastrophic threat of the Sinistrals, beings of divine power. Lufia 2 solidified the franchise's reputation as one of the most innovative RPGs of the 16-bit era, particularly in its mechanics.
Lufia 2 diverged from genre norms by removing random encounters and incorporating turn-based actions alongside complex environmental puzzles. It also laid groundwork for ‘roguelike’ design through the famed Ancient Cave. This 99-floor, procedurally generated challenge reset players to level one upon defeat, offering nearly infinite replayability long before the genre gained widespread popularity.
Clear River Games also plans to re-release another SNES RPG classic, Terranigma, in 2027.
