Mancini: 'We hope Tresoldi will feel 51 per cent Italian' by next summer
Roberto Mancini stated that Nicolò Tresoldi will not commit to an international team until June 2027. He expressed optimism that by then, Tresoldi will feel a stronger connection to Italy.
The 22-year-old player remains eligible for the European Under-21 Championship, which is set for June 2027.
Born in Italy to Italian parents, Tresoldi moved to Germany as an infant and was raised there, representing Germany at all youth levels. Despite Italy's approaches, Tresoldi has postponed his decision.
“We spoke with him,” confirmed Italy coach Mancini at a press conference. “He said he cannot decide right now because he committed to the Under-21 coach to play for Germany at the European Championship in June. He feels 50 per cent Italian and 50 per cent German. Hopefully, by June, he will feel 51 per cent Italian and 49 per cent German.”
Germany's Under-21 team has reason to keep Tresoldi. He scored 12 goals in 24 games for them, adding two assists. The door remains open for him to switch nationalities until he plays a competitive senior match.
Tresoldi's move to Club Brugge last summer could benefit Italy, as he is now playing away from both nations. This season, he has already scored five goals in nine appearances, following a previous tally of 23 goals in 58 games.
