Shigeru Miyamoto Dampens Hopes for a Super Smash Bros. Movie
Shigeru Miyamoto has tempered expectations for a Super Smash Bros. film. Despite high hopes following recent character announcements in Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie, the creator of Mario and Nintendo producer clarified to Polygon that such a project isn't imminent. Discussing the Super Mario Galaxy movie and the potential inclusion of characters like Pikmin and R.O.B., Miyamoto was asked about expanding the Mario universe.
While he didn't comment on Fox McCloud, Miyamoto reiterated that Pikmin can appear in any Nintendo franchise. However, he emphasized that he doesn't foresee a situation where "all Nintendo characters unite."
"First, I'll say that, unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don't think there will be a situation where all Nintendo characters come together. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any Nintendo series.
While we were working on this movie, I realized again how varied and talented the Super Mario characters are. When we had ideas from Illumination like 'How about this character? How about that one?', I would say: 'Oh, yes, that's right. We had this one. Oh, yes, that's right. We had that character.'
So it really reaffirmed the diverse nature of the characters in the Mario world. We have many characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a special touch, some secret cameos here and there. And you will see that there is a secret character who plays an important role. So I think it's possible that there will be character introductions like this in the future, something like that."
Another significant point is that the Super Smash Bros. roster is vast and diverse, featuring many characters from other companies beyond Nintendo. A film unable to include all of them could disappoint fans, and Nintendo would likely prefer to avoid such a scenario. For now, we can anticipate future cameos from characters like Samus, Pikachu, and Captain Falcon in other Nintendo film projects.
