Doki Doki Literature Club Removed from Google Play Store for 'Inappropriate Content'

The visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club, originally released in 2017, has become a legendary game. Although it appears to be a simple romantic story, players soon discover it's much more, hiding a disturbing horror narrative that touches on heavy themes like suicide, self-harm, and mental health. While available on numerous platforms in various versions for some time (some of which are free), it only recently arrived on mobile devices at the end of 2025, but its stay was short-lived on one of them. Google decided to remove DDLC from its Google Play platform, and it can no longer be acquired on Android phones through this official store.

Through an announcement on their official social media accounts, developer Dan Salvato and publisher Serenity Forge stated that according to Google, "the game's content violates the terms of service in its presentation of sensitive themes." Salvato explains that he disagrees with this decision and reminds that the game is "widely celebrated for its representation of mental health in ways that have deeply connected with players worldwide, helping them to feel heard, understood, and less alone in their journey."

The statement continues, saying they "are doing everything possible to find a path that allows for the reintegration of Doki Doki Literature Club on the Google Play Store," but they are also exploring alternative options for distributing the game on Android mobile devices.

Judging by responses to the announcements, press releases, and other publications, the gaming community fully supports Dan Salvato and Serenity Forge in this matter. Over the past year, we've been witnessing a wave of censorship on video game platforms that has led to the removal of interesting games like Vile: Exhumed and Horses from stores like Steam, promoted by ultra-conservative groups and payment services like VISA and Mastercard. Although there is clear rejection of these actions, the monopolistic nature of the industry has allowed them to succeed so far.
