Juventus experienced the frustration of two disallowed goals during their match against Lecce. Both instances involved striker Dusan Vlahovic being flagged for offside, though only one required an on-field review by VAR.
The Bianconeri initially took the lead with Vlahovic scoring less than 15 seconds into the game, following a cross from Andrea Cambiaso. However, their attempts to extend their lead were thwarted on two further occasions when the ball found the net, but these goals did not count.
Juventus’ Goals Overturned by VAR
The first disallowed goal occurred early in the second half. Vlahovic was positioned offside as he turned in a rebound from a parried effort by Cambiaso. VAR was able to quickly confirm this clear offside infringement and instruct the referee to disallow the goal.
The second disallowed goal proved to be more complex. In this situation, Vlahovic did not actually touch the ball. A panicked clearance from Lecce’s Jamal Siebert inadvertently led to Cambiaso delivering another cross, which was then flicked into the net by Pierre Kalulu. The debate centered on whether Vlahovic, by being in an offside position and potentially interfering with play, had impacted the situation. Since Vlahovic did not make contact with the ball, the decision of whether he was interfering with play was subjective, unlike the first clear-cut offside.
Consequently, VAR advised the referee, Andrea Colombo, to conduct an on-field review. After examining the monitor, the referee determined that Vlahovic was indeed interfering with play, as he nearly collided with Siebert, contributing to the error that led to the goal. Based on this assessment, the Juventus goal was disallowed.
