Preview Remakes of Classic Myst and Riven Confirmed for PS5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X/S

Developer Cyan has confirmed that the remakes of Myst (2020) and Riven (2024) will be released for PlayStation 5 (PS5) with PS VR2 support on May 19th, each priced at $35 USD on the PlayStation Store. The Riven remake will also be available on the same day for Xbox Series X/S and PC via the Microsoft Store. Myst was initially launched for Quest on December 10, 2020, followed by Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Microsoft Store on August 26, 2025. Riven first released for PC via Steam and GOG, Mac via the Mac App Store, and VR via Quest 2 and Quest 3 on June 25, 2024.

Both Myst and Riven support both flat-screen (2D) and PlayStation VR2 play from launch. The developers stated, “We applied some of the lessons learned from the launch of Firmament, a previous title of ours for PlayStation 5 (which also supported 2D and VR), to improve each playstyle in terms of interactions, graphical fidelity, base render resolution, performance, and more. In turn, some of the lessons learned from these new releases have already been incorporated into Firmament.”

Myst and Riven also feature ray tracing support through ray-traced reflections (limited to flat-screen mode). When ray-traced reflections are enabled, the frame rate is capped at 30 frames per second for a smoother gameplay experience, although more processing time is dedicated. When ray-traced reflections are disabled, each game’s frame rate increases to 60 frames per second. Players can enable ray-traced reflections by unchecking the ‘Performance Mode’ box in the display settings menu of each game. This will also subtly alter the base render resolution to optimize graphical performance.

The games are officially optimized for PlayStation 5 Pro, offering several advantages. Firstly, there’s enhanced graphical fidelity in the flat-screen mode of each game on PlayStation 5 Pro, including improved draw distance, foliage, textures, post-processing, and shading. Secondly, VR players on PlayStation 5 Pro will benefit from a better base render resolution in both titles. In Riven‘s flat-screen mode, enabling the ‘Performance Mode’ box will also provide a better base render resolution. The games leverage Unreal Engine’s optimized TSR implementations, allowing for scaling on both PlayStation 5 Pro and standard PlayStation 5 for improved graphical options.
