San Antonio experienced a night to forget as they returned to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, falling to the New York Knicks in the season’s championship opener (95-105). The loss was largely attributed to collective shooting struggles (32/89 from the field, including 11/45 from three-point range). Even Victor Wembanyama, who contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds, faced difficulties, shooting 6/21 and at times forcing plays.
Interestingly, the visitors started the game even colder, with Jalen Brunson beginning his finals appearance with a 1-of-8 shooting performance. Despite lacking consistent success early on, the three-time All-Star took control in the latter stages of the game. He sank a crucial three-pointer to put his team back in front (95-97, 39th minute) and then sealed the victory with a mid-range shot (95-101, 40th minute).
The Spurs now find themselves under pressure and in a must-win situation for Game 2, scheduled for Friday night to Saturday, if they are to keep pace with the Knicks. This is a scenario familiar to Wemby’s teammates, who previously lost the opening game of their series against Minnesota before ultimately winning it in six games.
