The Coalition kicked off the Xbox Games Showcase in 2026 with Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel developed from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. The title, which serves as an origin story rather than a direct sequel, is set to launch on October 6th. It will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and day one on Game Pass Ultimate.
The New Genesis of Gears Returns to Its Roots, Reclaiming Its Name and Telling the Story’s Beginning Before Emergence Day
While much of this was known, The Coalition revealed further details about the upcoming game at the end of the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase. Gears of War: E-Day is set in Kalona, an integrated coastal city that will face the Locust invasion over three days. As a fresh start, The Coalition’s team has rebuilt characters, weapons, and animations from scratch, leveraging technologies like MegaLights to enhance a horror atmosphere.
What Do We Know About Gears of War: E-Day’s Multiplayer?
The campaign will exclusively follow the perspective of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago within Bravo Squad, which now includes playable characters Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. The adventure will support online co-op for up to four players and split-screen for two on consoles.
In terms of gameplay, the combat system introduces slides during sprints, improved cover transitions, and the ability to vault over city rooftops. The arsenal will feature the Gnasher, Longshot, Gut Puncher grenade launcher, Incinerator shotgun, and the original Lancer with its chainsaw. In the multiplayer aspect, Horde Siege stands out, a PvE mode for 12 players divided into three squads, alongside the return of the traditional Versus mode in 4v4 matches with symmetrical maps.
When is the Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta?
