The sequel to the beloved creature-collecting indie game, Cassette Beasts 2002, is officially in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, as revealed by publisher Raw Fury. A release date is yet to be announced.
This new installment follows the success of Cassette Beasts, which launched in 2023 across multiple platforms and mobile, notably excluding PlayStation. While the original open-world RPG was available on the first Nintendo Switch, Cassette Beasts 2002 will exclusively launch on the upcoming Switch 2, marking its debut on the PlayStation 5 console.
In this highly anticipated sequel, players will have the ability to merge with an impressive roster of over 240 unique beasts. Furthermore, the game boasts an astounding combinatorial potential, allowing for over 50,000 distinct fusion possibilities when combining two beasts.
Players will be transported to Nodnol, a mysterious land existing in the shadow of our own, filled with strange beasts and unfolding secrets. Arriving in a quiet London neighborhood, you’ll soon find yourself thrust into an epic journey where the past collides with the present. A central question will arise: who is the enigmatic occultist Westerley, and what are his grand designs for both worlds?
You can step into the adventure as a brand-new player or import your character from the original Cassette Beasts to seamlessly continue your creature-collecting journey. The core gameplay loop involves recording beasts using cassette tapes and then playing them back to transform into their forms during combat. Strategic merging with your companions will be key to gaining the upper hand. The game will also feature an alchemy system, allowing you to apply buffs and debuffs to your attacks, or even alter an opponent’s elemental type during battles.
Building relationships will be a significant aspect of the game, as you can befriend, recruit, and even romance a diverse cast of twelve companions. Each companion comes with their own unique motivations, backstories, and gameplay advantages. Strengthening these bonds will unlock even more powerful fusion capabilities in combat. The game will also feature online multiplayer, enabling you to explore the beast-filled world of Nodnol with friends. You can trade tapes, record beasts together, and battle alongside other players in various encounters, including story-driven boss fights. Be warned, the beasts you encounter may defy expectations and even rebel against you.
