Following rumors that Modern Warfare 4, the latest installment in the CoD shooter series, would not be immediately available for previous-generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), questions arose about the fate of Call of Duty: Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale often tied to new releases. Specifically, would it cease to function on those older consoles?
Sadly, the answer is yes. Activision and developer Infinity Ward have officially confirmed that with the launch of the new game, they will be discontinuing the free-to-play version of Warzone for both the PS4 and Xbox One. What options do players who still enjoy the game on these consoles have? Let’s find out.
Activision has stated that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Call of Duty: Warzone will be removed from digital storefronts starting Thursday, June 4, 2026. Players who already own the game will still be able to re-download and play it without issue. However, after this date, no new players will be able to obtain it on these consoles. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions will remain available without any changes.
Players who continue to play will find that the in-game store, where they purchase operators, skins, and other items, will disappear starting Thursday, June 25.
Ultimately, the game will cease to function once the first season post-Modern Warfare 4 launch begins, which is expected in late October or early November 2026.
What can Call of Duty: Warzone players still on PS4 and Xbox One do? Unfortunately, they will need to make a decision. If they wish to continue playing, they will need to do so on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC. The good news is that all acquired items and COD Points are associated with your Activision account, meaning you won’t lose anything as long as you use the same account when switching platforms.
If you do not plan to or cannot acquire a new console or PC, the only recommendation is to spend your COD Points before the store is removed on June 25.
