The recent Xbox broadcast, announced last month, finally gave us a deep dive into Stranger Than Heaven, the new project from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that will explore the genesis of the Tojo Clan. This title will take us on a grand adventure spanning five decades of Japanese history, recounting the origins of the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) universe. Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release in the winter season of 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and will be available from launch for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
The Story of Stranger Than Heaven
We already knew that the story of Stranger Than Heaven spans 50 years, but what we didn’t know was that we would follow the life of Makoto Daito. Son of an American father and a Japanese mother, Makoto faced a difficult childhood in North America after losing his parents at a young age. In 1915, he decides to seek a new beginning in Japan, stowing away on a ship. Over half a century, players will witness his evolution from a young survivor to a respected and feared figure in both the entertainment world and the underworld, traversing periods of war, reconstruction, and massive cultural changes that swept through Japanese culture during those decades.
Main Characters of Stranger Than Heaven
The central axis of Stranger Than Heaven‘s story is the relationship between Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo. Yu is a young man of mixed heritage, slightly older than Makoto, whom he meets during his journey to Japan. Although they initially become partners, their ideals diverge: while Makoto simply seeks to survive, Yu possesses the ambition to “reform Japan.” This dynamic of friendship and rivalry will lead them to cross paths on multiple occasions, both in the world of crime and entertainment. Additionally, the cast includes figures like Takashi, Makoto’s assistant and protégé, and Suzy, an ambitious singer who appears in the post-war era.
Snoop Dogg’s Role
While already known, one of the most notable surprises for many is the participation of American rapper Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known worldwide as Snoop Dogg, who portrays Orpheus, described as a “ruthless and charismatic” smuggler. Orpheus discovers Makoto and Yu on their ship and, instead of throwing them overboard, decides to take them to Kokura to work for him. Cordell Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s real-life son, also plays a key character in Stranger Than Heaven.
Furthermore, Cordell described his father’s role (Orpheus) as a figure who exploits Makoto’s talent for languages and music for his own ends. Thus, Snoop Dogg’s role in the story of Stranger Than Heaven will be that of a mentor to Makoto Daito, the protagonist of this new adventure from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
Combat System in Stranger Than Heaven
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has designed a completely new combat system for Stranger Than Heaven, which will allow for independent control of Makoto’s left and right sides. Using the controller’s triggers and shoulder buttons, players will be able to execute complex attacks, block with one arm while counter-attacking with the other, or even fight while one of their limbs is immobilized. The system includes charged attacks, cinematic finishers, and an extensive arsenal that evolves over time. It also features weapon upgrade mechanics and others that will be revealed in the future.
Beyond combat, an important mechanic in Stranger Than Heaven is the management of the entertainment world. Makoto has a special talent for finding “music in everyday life,” allowing the player to record sounds from the environment (like trains or an enemy’s blow) to compile them into a library. These sounds are then used to create original compositions with the help of in-game composers. As a “showman,” Makoto must also recruit talent, organize band structures, and manage setlists for live performances, which is one of the secondary activities that will aid in our character’s progression.
What Else Do We Know About Stranger Than Heaven?
The game is set in five districts inspired by real Japanese cities during three eras of the country’s modern history. Kokura (1915), an industrial center and hotbed of all kinds of vices in the Taishō era. Kure (1929), where Makoto joins the Iwaki yakuza family. Minami (1943), an extravagant entertainment center in Osaka. Atami (1951), a tourist destination showcasing natural beauty and American influence; and finally Shinjuku, Tokyo (1965), with the latter three locations set in the Shōwa era. The project features the collaboration of artists such as Satoshi Fujihara (J-Pop), American singer-songwriter Tori Kelly, and Japanese soloist Ado, who not only lend their voices to characters but also composed and participated in the performance of the game’s main theme.
In addition to the participation of Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus, the cast of Stranger Than Heaven stands out for an international collaboration that reinforces the story’s cultural clash. Among the confirmed talents are J-Pop artist Satoshi Fujihara, who plays Takashi, Makoto’s protégé, and American singer-songwriter Tori Kelly as Suzy, a singer embodying Western influence in the post-war period. Joining this impressive international cast is a group of renowned Japanese actors who will bring key characters to life. Among them are highly experienced figures such as Yu Shirota, Moeka Hoshi, Akio Otsuka (renowned voice actor), and the veteran Tokuma Nishioka.
Stranger Than Heaven Has Not Been Without Controversy
During the trailer, the announcement of the legendary and late actor Bunta Sugawara as one of the characters in Stranger Than Heaven was striking. Sugawara is an iconic figure who starred in the yakuza film saga Battles Without Honor and Humanity in the 70s. Sugawara’s importance transcended cinema, having served as inspiration for characters like Admiral Akainu in One Piece and lending his voice to Kamajī in Spirited Away.
For Stranger Than Heaven, Sega obtained formal consent from Bunta Sugawara’s family and worked with archival material from Toei Company to recreate his image using high-fidelity models. Since the actor passed away in 2014, his vocal performance will be handled by Takashi Ukaji (Raoh in Fist of the North Star), who maintained a close bond with Sugawara during his life. While this is seen in Japan as a tribute to a legend, in the West, it has not been received in the same way by some fans of the RGG Studio universe.
