Preview Star Fox for Switch 2: All You Need to Know About the New Star Fox 64 Remake

Following its stellar appearance in Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie, Fox McCloud returns to the skies with a second remake of Star Fox 64, a game that itself received a stereoscopic remake on the Nintendo 3DS. Star Fox for Switch 2 also introduces an additional prequel story, featuring Fox’s father and his fleet in a narrative preceding the conflict with the antagonistic Dr. Andross. The game was announced during a surprise Nintendo Direct. Experience new and returning game modes as you embark on a dangerous mission to save the Lylat System, now explorable in greater detail thanks to a complete visual overhaul of the game.

The maniacal scientist Andross seeks control of the Lylat star system, with only Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team standing in his way. Pilot your Arwing and traverse the system, battling enemy forces and performing aerial maneuvers like barrel rolls and somersaults to shake off pursuers. Discover alternate routes through the Lylat System across multiple playthroughs, facing new missions and varied challenges.

This new Star Fox can be considered a more cinematic version of Star Fox 64, featuring updated character designs, a refreshed look for each stage, along with detailed cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue, and a majestic orchestral soundtrack.

Players will revisit iconic locations from the Nintendo 64 classic, with adjustable difficulty settings and a variety of levels, missions in Landmaster, Blue Marine, and All-Range modes. The level designs remain true to Star Fox 64, but the dialogue, graphics, and character designs have been completely revamped for the Switch 2.

“Do a barrel roll!”

Star Fox will also include entirely new cinematic sequences. Players can tackle challenge missions with new objectives in each mission, not found in the standard game. These missions will be available in Normal or Expert modes. As it’s available for Switch 2, you can play using ‘mouse’ controls with the Joy-Cons, including a co-op mode where one player controls the pilot with a Joy-Con, and the other uses ‘mouse’ controls as the gunner.

Climb into your Arwing, a high-performance aerospace fighter, and use laser fire to take down opposing forces. You can also brake in mid-air to shake off enemies, deploy a boost for extra propulsion, perform a somersault, and of course, execute barrel rolls to defend against incoming fire.

The Battle Mode, a returning feature from Star Fox 64, also makes a comeback. Players can face off as either the Star Fox or Star Wolf teams in Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y. These matches can be played via matchmaking or in private lobbies. As in Star Fox 64, you can play Battle Mode using local GameShare. You can also utilize GameChat with the game, including an avatar feature that makes your in-camera appearance resemble your favorite Star Fox character.

Star Fox won’t be flying far from your console, as it’s set to arrive on Switch 2 on June 25th.
