Preview Sonia Belmont Confirmed as Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Protagonist

One of the biggest surprises from PlayStation’s State of Play in February was the announcement of a new 2D classic-style Castlevania game. Titled Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, its trailer generated significant excitement but also left a crucial question unanswered: who is the protagonist of this game?

Although the trailer directly mentioned Trevor Belmont—the protagonist of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and the first four seasons of the Netflix animated series—it was clear that the playable character would be a woman. Fans immediately began speculating whether she was a brand-new character or the return of the only official female Belmont clan member previously playable: Sonia Belmont.

The answer didn’t come from Konami, but from a very official source: Sony itself.

In a publication dedicated to celebrating “PlayStation’s greatest heroines” as part of International Women’s Day on Sunday, March 8th, a small section was included that named the protagonist of the anticipated game: Sonia Belmont.

The message stated:

Whenever the darkness of Dracula’s forces threatens to consume the world, a Belmont will emerge from the shadows to protect humanity. When a series of monster attacks plunges Paris into chaos, it is Sonia Belmont who wields the sacred Vampire Killer whip, ready to fulfill her family’s holy duty.

Sonia Belmont is a virtually legendary figure among the Castlevania fan community, known “not so much for who she is, but for who she could have been.” In the original canon, she was a 15th-century vampire hunter believed to be the progenitor of the entire clan. She starred in the underwhelming 1997 Game Boy title, Castlevania Legends, and was slated to return in the Dreamcast game Castlevania: Resurrection, which was ultimately canceled (though its prototype was recovered and made playable in 2021).

She also appears as a controllable character in the Castlevania collaboration with Vampire Survivors.

Despite her significant potential, this character was largely forgotten and de-canonized—until now. With her return in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, it seems Sonia may no longer be the original vampire huntress but rather a descendant of Trevor Belmont. We will have to await further official information to confirm the specific details of her new backstory.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2026, with an exact release date yet to be announced.
