National Chess Day was celebrated on Saturday, October 13, 2018, with a special event in Vancouver, WA. Grandmaster James Tarjan hosted an exciting simultaneous exhibition at the Vancouver Mall, located at 8700 NE Vancouver Mall Drive. The exhibition took place on the lower level near the Macy’s entrance, adjacent to the mall’s popular large chess set.

Over the course of approximately three hours, GM Tarjan faced a diverse group of 14 players, comprising adults, children, and one woman. This memorable event was free for both participants and spectators. Demonstrating his exceptional skill, the Grandmaster emerged victorious in all his games.

The event was expertly organized by Russell “Rusty” Miller. It was made possible through the generous support of several sponsors, including Vancouver Mall, Northwest Chess, US Chess (which provided chess magazines), Chess Butler (contributing chess books as prizes), Esther Schrader, EinsteinWise Academy (supplying chess sets and boards), and IQ Credit Union of Vancouver, WA (providing pens for players to record their games).
