Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has lauded head coach Gautam Gambhir for guiding the national team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. Under Gambhir’s leadership, India clinched the multi-nation tournament on March 8, defeating New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Following this monumental success, Pathan commended his former India teammate for his exceptional coaching. The left-handed cricketer highlighted Gambhir’s steadfast belief in his vision, even when confronted with significant criticism.

“Gautam Gambhir faced a torrent of criticism. It was undoubtedly challenging, and at times seemed unwarranted. However, his composure and unwavering commitment to his strategic vision, despite numerous obstacles, were truly impressive. He deserves significant credit. While the players’ outstanding performance merits full recognition, Gambhir’s role in managing them effectively, demonstrating strong leadership, and unlocking their best potential was equally pivotal,” Pathan elaborated on his YouTube channel.

Pathan further emphasized the remarkable camaraderie between the coach and captain Suryakumar Yadav. He noted their effective partnership, with Suryakumar frequently consulting the erstwhile India opener, which proved crucial for the team’s overall performance.

“It was a recurring sight to see Surya communicate with Gautam Gambhir through hand signals from the field. For instance, today during the powerplay, after Jasprit Bumrah had bowled one over, Surya signaled to Gautam to give him another. Consequently, Bumrah bowled two overs in that powerplay. This wasn’t an isolated incident; such active communication was observed consistently,” he added.

“Therefore, immense credit goes to Gautam Gambhir, and equally to Suryakumar Yadav for his leadership. Their collective management and guidance of this team have been exemplary. India has now secured another trophy, becoming world champions for the third time. Well done, Team India,” he concluded.

Since assuming the role of India’s head coach in July 2024, Gambhir has presided over a mixed record. Nevertheless, he has remarkably steered the team to two major ICC white-ball titles: the Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026.
