Preview Gasperini: Coach and Sporting Director Must Be Connected, Hints at Koné’s Roma Exit

Roma’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, has stressed the importance of a strong and unified relationship between the coach and the sporting director. In his recent statements, he also indicated that Manu Koné’s departure from the Stadio Olimpico in the summer is a possibility.

The Giallorossi are currently preparing for an away fixture against Parma, a team that has already secured its position in the league. Meanwhile, Roma continues to compete for a Champions League spot, sitting just one point behind fourth-placed Juventus.

Parma vs. Roma – Gasperini’s Pre-Match Press Conference

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Gasperini stated, “Every game is decisive, especially now, with only three remaining.” He acknowledged Parma’s quality, noting, “Parma play good football, even if they have secured survival, no team ever gives anything away, and this is positive.” Gasperini also expressed respect for Parma’s coach, Carlos Cuesta, describing him as “a very prepared lad” who has quickly reached the top despite his youth.

Gasperini has been granted increased authority by the club’s owners, particularly after the dismissal of Senior Advisor Claudio Ranieri. Ranieri reportedly had a strained relationship with Gasperini, as does Roma’s sporting director, Frederic Massara, who is also expected to leave at the end of the season.

When questioned about Roma’s planning for the next season, Gasperini responded, “A lot depends on what the club wants to do, so we need to turn to them.” He added, “I don’t see anyone holding an advantage. Things evolve quickly at the end of the season.” He highlighted the team’s resilience, stating, “This is a valuable group, as the results prove. Their reaction in difficult moments was evident.” Gasperini also pointed out the financial benefits of Champions League qualification, acknowledging that it provides greater market resources, but emphasized that many clubs operate successfully even without substantial funds.

Regarding the synergy between roles, Gasperini asserted, “I must work with my ideas; the coach and the sporting director must work together, not with everyone taking different paths. They need to speak honestly to technically improve Roma in a way that is compatible with the resources and the coach’s ideas.” He continued, “That must be the only goal. Those are two roles that must be very close and connected, giving mutual support by understanding each other’s difficulties. My way of playing has brought certain results, and I want to carry forward my strengths. I’m looking for players who can help me develop my playing style.”

Should Roma fail to qualify for the Champions League, financial considerations might necessitate the sale of key players. Koné has reportedly attracted significant interest from multiple clubs. Gasperini remarked, “Nobody is unsellable in modern football, except for some top clubs.” He elaborated on the financial aspect of top-four qualification, stating, “Again, talking about the top four, without resources, it’s something that we must consider. But these offers are rare; it’s mostly just rumours. Koné is a strong player, and I hope he continues to play for Roma, but it will depend on offers that might allow us to do different things.”

Reports suggest Gasperini is advocating for contract extensions for Paulo Dybala, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Zeki Celik. He commented, “It doesn’t seem to me that I’ve been involved. If I am, I’ll have my say.” He added, “They are very busy right now, and when the time comes for them, we’ll be able to talk. Evidently, it’s still not the right time, but it will come, and we must all be convinced. We won’t be allowed to have doubts or uncertainties.”
