Vanoli Praises Fiorentina's Resilience in Rakow Victory, Reflects on Emotional Debut

Coach Paolo Vanoli expressed immense satisfaction with Fiorentina's late comeback and unwavering belief in their Conference League triumph against Rakow. He also shared a "sentimental" moment witnessing a young debutant's emotional reaction.

The Viola initially fell behind when Jonatan Braut Brunes capitalized on a defensive error, giving Rakow the lead. However, Fiorentina responded almost immediately, with Cher Ndour curling in an equalizer just 20 seconds after the restart.

As the match seemed headed for a draw before the trip to Poland, a clumsy handball by Michael Ameyaw from Dodo's cross awarded Fiorentina a stoppage-time penalty. Albert Gudmundsson calmly converted it, securing a vital home win.

"The squad performed admirably," Vanoli told Sky Sport Italia. "Despite a crucial Serie A match looming, they maintained focus, recognizing the importance of the Conference League. Our first half was structured but lacked decisive quality and determination. Unfortunately, every minor mistake costs us, and it happened again today. Yet, we reacted well and maintained our belief until the very end."

This victory was crucial for Fiorentina, who had recently endured a shaky period. They nearly squandered a 3-0 Conference League playoff lead against Jagiellonia, barely progressing 5-4 on aggregate in extra time. This was followed by a heavy Serie A defeat to Udinese and a goalless draw against Parma, impacting team confidence.

"We now hold a narrow advantage for the second leg," Vanoli cautioned. "I reminded the players of last night's Champions League events – the necessity of staying fully engaged and not getting complacent. It's challenging to stabilize a season after a difficult start. Florence deserves more, and we all understand that. Together, we must fight this year to keep Fiorentina competitive in both Serie A and the Conference League. It's a delicate balance, but we are improving, consistently overcoming setbacks through collective hard work and sacrifice."

Fiorentina faces a demanding schedule ahead, with a critical Serie A clash against Cremonese on Monday, followed by the second leg against Rakow in Poland next Thursday. To prepare for the Cremona match, the club has decided on a full squad training retreat.

"From my playing days, I know training retreats must be timed correctly," Vanoli explained. "We are fortunate to have an excellent facility that provides everything we need. After a late game, waking up and immediately getting to work can be incredibly beneficial. I prefer holding it the day after a match rather than before; that's my philosophy. Staying together post-victory also strengthens our bond and allows us to savor the moment, and to congratulate Braschi."

The match also featured an emotional moment: Riccardo Braschi, a lifelong Fiorentina supporter, made his senior debut and was visibly moved to tears after the final whistle.

"I felt emotional myself; I'm a sentimental person," Vanoli admitted. "I've worked extensively with young players, and we need everyone this season. The real challenges begin now for him, as he'll face increased scrutiny and expectations when he returns to the youth team. But he earned his debut through merit."
