OM-Atlético: Genesio Defends Balerdi Against Fan Boos

Leonardo Balerdi faced a tough evening during Olympique de Marseille's friendly match against Atlético Madrid. After being involved in both goals conceded by OM, leading to a 1-2 loss, the Argentine defender was met with audible boos and whistles from the Marseille supporters at the Vélodrome.

The crowd's reaction intensified with each touch of the ball Balerdi made after his costly errors. The jeers continued even as he was substituted in the 80th minute.

Following the match, OM's new coach, Bruno Genesio, addressed the situation during a press conference. He acknowledged the difficulty Balerdi must have experienced, stating, "Until the first goal, I think he was playing well. Afterwards, it's difficult when you're a player at a club and you hear so many whistles every time you touch the ball."

Genesio emphasized the team's commitment and dedication since the start of training, highlighting Balerdi's own efforts. "It's a difficult situation for me too, because I see my players every day. I can tell you they have been irreproachable for six weeks since we resumed training. Léo is also one of those players who are irreproachable in their commitment and investment during training."

The coach firmly defended his player, reminding that errors are an inherent part of the game and that the public's reaction should not further destabilize a player already in a difficult position. "Mistakes are part of the game. It's always regrettable for me to hear one of my players being somewhat thrown to the wolves," Genesio stated.

While understanding the supporters' disappointment with the performance, Genesio suggested that booing was not the most constructive response to help Balerdi bounce back. "I understand that people can be disappointed with everything that happened. But I find that perhaps it's not the best response, for the team or for him. It doesn't put him in the best possible conditions," he continued.

Genesio reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Argentine defender, especially during this challenging period. "I understand. But I will always be behind my players, I will always be behind him, that's my way of being. This is a principle I've had since I've been a coach, and also in my life. You have to be there in good times and in the most difficult times. We are with him, I am with him," concluded the 59-year-old coach.

Balerdi will need to move past this experience quickly, as OM prepares for its first official match of the season. They will host Strasbourg at the Vélodrome next Friday at 8:45 PM for the opening day of Ligue 1.
