Italy's national team coach, Gennaro Gattuso, faces a pre-World Cup play-off challenge as key defenders Alessandro Bastoni (Inter) and Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal) sustained injuries in their recent club matches. With the crucial World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland just two weeks away, the Azzurri camp anxiously awaits updates from their respective clubs.

Riccardo Calafiori was forced off the pitch during Arsenal's 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town on Saturday. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta later indicated that Calafiori was experiencing "little niggles" and was "uncomfortable continuing." An updated assessment of his condition is expected on Tuesday, ahead of Arsenal's match against Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Alessandro Bastoni was injured during Inter's 1-0 defeat to Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday. He was substituted after a challenge with Adrien Rabiot, which also resulted in a yellow card. Inter coach Cristian Chivu confirmed after the match that Bastoni "took a knock in the shin" and was "limping." The club's medical staff is scheduled to assess Bastoni's condition on Tuesday. Despite appearing to be in significant pain and needing assistance off the pitch, both Inter and Italy are hopeful that a couple of days of rest will suffice for the defender to be fit for upcoming fixtures.

Under coach Gennaro Gattuso, Bastoni has made four appearances for Italy, while Calafiori has featured three times, having missed some matches due to injury or remaining an unused substitute. Italy is set to host Northern Ireland in the World Cup play-off semi-final on March 26. Should they advance, they will face the winner of the Wales versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match in the final.
