Changes implemented over the summer aimed to boost entertainment and increase the pace of play, aligning it more closely with European standards. A significant factor is a revised refereeing approach, allowing for more continuous play with fewer stoppages.
Serie A Teams Can’t Stop Scoring
These adjustments have yielded results. Teams are scoring more, and notably, the first 31 top-flight matches featured no penalties or on-field VAR reviews. The absence of goalless draws across the opening four rounds of both leagues is a historic first.
So far this season, 121 goals have been scored in the first 40 Italian top-flight games, averaging 3.025 goals per match. Week 4 alone saw 39 goals across 10 games, including notable scorelines like Sassuolo 3-2 Juventus and Inter 5-3 Udinese.
In contrast, the Premier League recorded four 0-0 draws in its opening four rounds, and LaLiga had three. A total of six stalemates have occurred in Serie A this season, suggesting teams are increasingly pushing for wins.
