Grosso: 'I've asked myself one question' after Italy World Cup flop

Sassuolo coach Fabio Grosso, a key member of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad, expressed a mix of emotions: satisfaction for his player Tarik Muharemovic, yet profound sadness for the Italian national team. He emphasized the necessity for "the right individuals with clear strategies" to guide the Azzurri forward, acknowledging that "it's a lengthy journey."

Grosso, who famously scored the decisive penalty in the 2006 World Cup Final against France, reflected on Italy's recent defeat in the World Cup play-off Final.

"I shared the sentiments of all Italians; we desperately wished to qualify for the World Cup, a tournament we've been absent from for too long," Grosso stated prior to a Serie A match against Cagliari. "Regrettably, we failed to secure our spot."

He pondered, "The question that keeps coming to mind is: what if Pio or Kean had netted that crucial second goal? While it seems straightforward, this query opens up numerous complex discussions and explanations."

"My current role is distinct, and my focus is entirely on my coaching duties. However, we must analyze events beyond mere isolated incidents. Otherwise, the cycle of blame will simply repeat itself."

"Conversely, there's a collective responsibility to revitalize our football. This demands the right individuals, armed with clear visions. The path ahead is arduous, but it's essential that they define the direction for this fresh start."

Sassuolo's Tarik Muharemovic was a member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina squad that defeated Italy in a penalty shootout on Tuesday.

"Tarik has returned, but I haven't had a chance to speak with him yet," Grosso mentioned.

"I'll speak with him today, with a bittersweet feeling. We're pleased for his success, but naturally, saddened by our own outcome. I also want to extend my congratulations to Idzes, who was named Player of the Year in Indonesia."

The FIGC announced on Friday that Gennaro Gattuso's contract was mutually terminated following Italy's defeat in Bosnia on Tuesday.
