Gasperini: Roma's Europa League Exit Showed "Best and Worst" in Bologna Defeat

Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of Roma, reflected on his team's dramatic Europa League exit following a 4-3 defeat (5-4 on aggregate) to Bologna. He stated that the match laid bare both the finest and most problematic aspects of his squad, and he expressed disappointment over the team's limited options, lamenting his inability to replicate the attacking flair he had cultivated at Atalanta.

Throughout the tie, Roma consistently found themselves playing catch-up. Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Giallorossi dramatically fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico. Goals from Evan Ndicka, Donyell Malen, and Lorenzo Pellegrini ultimately forced the match into extra time. However, it was Nicolò Cambiaghi's decisive "snooker shot" finish in extra time that sealed a 4-3 victory for Bologna on the night, securing their 5-4 aggregate win and progression in the tournament.

Gasperini Frustrated by Roma's Inconsistency

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Gasperini confessed, “It was undoubtedly a captivating match, and we leave it with profound regret, having witnessed both our peak performance and our fundamental flaws tonight. The majority of the game displayed our best, but our worst was evident in the goals we conceded, forcing us into a constant pursuit of a comeback, despite executing many positive actions. It’s truly a shame that such a performance was marred by these critical errors.”

Bologna capitalized on defensive lapses to establish their 3-1 lead. Gasperini singled out Gianluca Mancini for criticism regarding his reaction during the play that led to Bologna's opening goal. “Mancini remained on the ground after a shirt pull, which allowed Rowe to advance unopposed,” Gasperini explained. “It was an unusual circumstance, but regrettably, we displayed naivety.”

This defeat extends Roma's current challenging period, marking five consecutive competitive matches without a victory, and seeing them drop from fourth to sixth place in the Serie A standings.

Gasperini acknowledged the demanding nature of this stage of the season: “As you approach this point in the season, the intensity and pressure escalate, and fatigue becomes a significant factor. This team undeniably possesses spirit; they conceded a penalty right before halftime, yet battled back from 3-1 down, giving us a sense that momentum was shifting in our favor. However, it’s unequivocal that committing such errors will inevitably lead to losing matches.”

Despite Manu Koné's early injury, Gasperini utilized only two substitutions within the initial 90 minutes, and four out of a possible six total (including the extra-time allowance). He elaborated on the severe limitations in attack, citing the absence of key players like Paulo Dybala, Matias Soulé, Artem Dovbyk, and Evan Ferguson, in addition to Lorenzo Venturino not being registered for UEFA competitions.

“During extra time, fatigue was evident, but our ability to make further changes was severely restricted,” Gasperini stated. “Bologna introduced three fast and fresh attackers, which made it incredibly challenging. It’s clear that when you’re missing four or five players from the same area of the squad, you’re bound to struggle over an extended period. Despite these constraints, we’ve integrated an exceptional Donyell Malen, who has significantly enhanced the threat of our attacks. While we had a more diverse range of goal-scorers in the first half of the season, the scarcity of attacking alternatives has been a persistent issue since the campaign began.”

Having previously lifted the Europa League trophy with Atalanta, Gasperini has encountered a vastly different environment at Roma, noting underlying tensions regarding squad formation. “My ambition upon arriving at Roma was to replicate specific attacking dynamics, but whether due to injuries or the inability to acquire players with the necessary attributes, we haven’t fully achieved that,” he confessed. “Nevertheless, my players have consistently shown immense effort, and that was evident again tonight. Particularly over the past week, in matches against Como and Bologna, I have few complaints about their strong performances.”

A January acquisition, Robinio Vaz, also made a notable impact after coming on as a substitute, persistently challenging Jhon Lucumi and even earning a penalty. Gasperini commented on the young player: “He is undoubtedly very young and represents a significant investment, which naturally brings a burden of expectations. He requires time to develop, but he possesses vibrancy and physical strength, making him a useful asset. However, to aspire to higher achievements, you require players with greater experience and proven pedigree.”
