Edoardo Bove Recounts Cardiac Arrest, Mourinho's Support, and Watford Comeback
Edoardo Bove has shared a touching detail about Jose Mourinho, revealing how the coach made a special effort to contact his parents after Bove suffered a severe cardiac arrest in 2024. Bove also reflected on the stark contrast between feeling invincible and then being told his football career was over.
Bove's recovery has been remarkable, especially considering he collapsed on the pitch from a cardiac arrest during a Serie A fixture between Inter and Fiorentina on December 1, 2024.
Then on loan at Fiorentina from Roma, Bove was urgently hospitalized, placed in intensive care, and subsequently received an implanted removable defibrillator.
While the defibrillator prevents him from competing professionally in Italy, Bove has been able to resume his career in the UK, where regulations regarding heart conditions and implanted devices are more flexible. This situation mirrors Christian Eriksen's experience, who, after a cardiac arrest at EURO 2020, left Inter but continued his career in the Premier League with Brentford and Manchester United.
His path led him to Watford, where he has since made eight league appearances.
Bove on His Ordeal and Return to Football
In a recent interview, Bove discussed the tumultuous period he experienced over the last 18 months.
"The last thing I recall is collapsing," Bove shared. "I woke up in the hospital, completely unaware of what had happened, initially believing I'd been in a car accident."
He continued, "Before the incident, I felt unstoppable. Then, I was informed I would never play football again, leading to moments of profound uncertainty and very dark days."
"It was incredibly tough," he admitted, "but it became part of my journey. I'm content with the outcome and feel I've learned more this past year than from all my previous experiences combined."
During the interview, Bove revealed the appearance of the implanted defibrillator.
"For the first month, sleeping on your side is difficult, and it alters your physique," he explained. "Seeing those changes in the mirror can be painful for some, but I never felt disappointed."
"I consider myself fortunate it happened at the ideal age of 22," Bove stated. "I was mature enough to grasp its significance, yet still possessed the youthful energy and drive to overcome it."
Mourinho's Personal Touch
Bove then shared that his former Roma coach, Jose Mourinho, made extraordinary efforts to reach out to him while he was hospitalized and unable to use his phone.
"He truly cares for every player he's coached, some perhaps more than others!" Bove remarked.
"Mourinho initially contacted me directly, but as I couldn't respond, he reached out to my parents," Bove explained. "I have an incredible bond with him; he's a highly significant figure to both me and my family."
"Reflecting on the past can be emotional, yet it also fills me with pride," Bove concluded. "It was a challenging period, but I managed to transform a difficult situation into a valuable opportunity."
"I now have a different outlook on life," he added. "Without an open mind, you miss out on so much. I'm truly happy."
