Cremonese's Stunning Victory Over Parma Reshapes Relegation Battle

Marco Giampaolo enjoyed a sensational start to his tenure as Cremonese manager, pulling Parma deeply back into the Serie A relegation scrap with crucial goals from Youssef Maleh and Jari Vandeputte at the Stadio Tardini.

Before this match, Parma, despite only gathering two points from their last three games, including a significant 4-1 loss to Torino, were relatively secure in mid-table. The team faced several absences due to suspension (Enrico Delprato) and injuries (Adrian Bernabé, Benja Cremaschi, Pontus Almqvist, and Matija Frigan).

Cremonese, on the other hand, arrived in a precarious position, having been thrashed 4-1 by Fiorentina, which left them three points deep in the drop zone and led to Davide Nicola's dismissal. With Warren Bondo suspended and Federico Baschirotto, Michele Collocolo, and Faris Moumbagna injured, Giampaolo opted for a 4-4-2 formation.

Early in the game, Jari Vandeputte made a threatening counter-attack run from his own half, forcing a save from Zion Suzuki at the near post. Parma's first notable chance came from Mateo Pellegrini, whose shot went just wide, while Bonazzoli's header was comfortably saved by Suzuki.

Cremonese finally broke the deadlock when a misjudged clearance by Sasha Britschgi landed at Youssef Maleh's feet. From 20 meters out, Maleh unleashed a powerful first-time left-footed shot into the far bottom corner, marking his first Serie A goal since 2021.

Their deserved lead was then doubled shortly after. Substitute Jamie Vardy, introduced into the game, quickly made an impact, providing a decisive assist. He rolled the ball across from the left, allowing Vandeputte to surge through the center, take a touch, and then calmly beat the on-rushing Suzuki.

Parma tried to respond, with Gabriel Strefezza firing high and wide. Hans Nicolussi Caviglia's shot seemed destined for the target but was deflected just inches wide by Sebastiano Luperto. Martin Payero had a late opportunity from another Vardy assist but failed to control his first touch effectively. This victory marked Cremonese's first Serie A win since their 2-0 triumph over Lecce on December 7, having since endured four draws and eleven defeats.
