Masaaki Hoshino, the director of Pokémon Champions, has explained the team's decision not to include single-player modes in the online competitive title. Currently, the game, developed for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and mobile, is exclusively focused on its multiplayer format. It was designed to be the flagship competitive battling game in the Pokémon series, featuring turn-based combat and slated for use in all official competitions going forward, much like in the past Pokémon World Championships 2026.
Hoshino has ruled out the possibility of the game receiving exclusive content such as cups, a Gym Leader’s Castle, or an 'offline' campaign mode, especially considering it follows in the footsteps of games like Pokémon Stadium and even Pokémon Colosseum. For the developers of Champions, such additions would detract from the game's core PvP focus.
"At the moment, we probably won't be adding additional modes similar to those in Pokémon Stadium. The reason is that if a lot of single-player modes are added, people drift away from PvP, which increases the length of matches and makes PvP a little more difficult. So, at least while there are more players, I want to focus on PvP for now," he stated, as reported by VGC.
The emphasis on Pokémon Champions as the primary game for official competitive play implies that future mainline games, such as the tenth generation's Pokémon Wind / Wave, will not be featured in championships, even if they incorporate multiplayer components (which remain unknown at this time). In the meantime, players can enjoy both Pokémon Stadium titles on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for Switch and Switch 2. Pokémon Colosseum will be available at any time, but exclusively with a membership on Switch 2.
Pokémon capable of experiencing Z-Moves will debut in Pokémon Champions on September 9, 2026. Prepare to battle against Mega Lucario Z, Mega Garchomp Z, and Mega Absol Z. Players will also see Rillaboom and Baxcalibur, two Pokémon that have made a significant impact in the Pokémon Championship Series. Mega Heatran was also revealed.
