The Nintendo Direct presentation on September 9, 2026, finally confirmed that the rumors of a new 2D Metroid game were indeed true. Nintendo officially announced Metroid Ravenous, offering juicy details about this new title in its reveal trailer, including its release date.

This game appears to be developed by the Spanish studio MercurySteam – the creators behind Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread – and will be available for purchase on Thursday, January 28, 2027, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. It will not be released for the original Nintendo Switch.

The plot follows Samus after she was attacked by unknown enemies, leaving her stranded on a dangerous moon. Determined to survive and escape, the bounty hunter will utilize a new ability to absorb enemies, stating, "devour or be devoured." This is where the game's title originates.

These unknown enemies feature an intriguing aesthetic, with tall hats reminiscent of ancient Japanese warriors. They are likely to be her primary adversaries and pursuers in this adventure.

Towards the end of the trailer, Samus is seen in a green suit described as the "Metroid Armor." How she acquires this new power-up will be a key point of interest.

Based on the trailer, Metroid Ravenous appears to be a 2D action-platformer with 3D graphics and cinematic sequences. It is highly probable that it will feature a Metroidvania-style interconnected world map, though this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Alongside the game, two new Amiibo figures were announced: one of Samus and another of a Chozo Statue. These will be released on the same day, January 28, 2027.

Additionally, a special edition of Metroid Ravenous was revealed, which includes the game, a steelbook case, and a Samus Amiibo in the new Metroid Armor. It's suggested that this Amiibo might be exclusive to this special edition, but this has not been confirmed.
