Industry observers will recall the significant challenges faced by Embracer Group in 2023 and 2024. Fueled by the pandemic-driven boom in video game success, the company embarked on an aggressive acquisition strategy, purchasing numerous studios. However, the abrupt cancellation of a major Saudi investment left them in a precarious position, leading to the closure of many acquired studios and thousands of employee layoffs. This resulted in the group being divided into three entities, and now, further restructuring is underway.
In an official announcement, the remaining entity of Embracer has revealed its intention to split into two distinct companies:
Fellowship Entertainment will be a new company dedicated to the development, licensing, and distribution of video games based on well-known franchises. Its focus will be on major intellectual properties such as The Lord of the Rings, Tomb Raider, Darksiders, Dead Island, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Metro, and Remnant. The studios operating under Fellowship Entertainment will include 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Dark Horse Media, Eidos-Montréal, Fishlabs, Flying Wild Hog Studios, Gunfire Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, Redoctane Games, and Warhorse Studios.
The other new company will retain the name Embracer and will adopt a more decentralized operational model, focusing not only on games but also on “entertainment and services.” This entity will oversee titles such as Destroy All Humans!, Desperados, Gothic, Killing Floor, Kingdom of Amalur, MX vs. ATV, Reanimal, Ride, Screamer, Titan Quest, Wreckfest, as well as video games based on Hot Wheels and SpongeBob SquarePants. The studios that will remain with Embracer are Aspyr, Beamdog, CrazyLabs, Deca, Demiurge, DPI Merchandising, Limited Run Games, Milestone, PLAION Partners, PLAION Pictures, THQ Nordic, Tripwire, and Vertigo Games.
During the announcement, Embracer’s board director, Lars Wingeford, also addressed the highly publicized layoffs that affected thousands of developers. He stated that while some may associate the company primarily with these events, “the reality is that they worked very hard to preserve as many employees as possible during a difficult period while trying to maintain a profitable operation.”
Ultimately, the impact of these organizational changes on players is secondary to the hope that the studios, whether under the new Fellowship Entertainment or the rebranded Embracer, can continue to produce excellent games without the looming threat of layoffs.
These structural changes are expected to take effect in 2027.
