FC Barcelona experienced their most substantial home defeat ever, with a 25-point deficit. This loss surpassed previous records, including a 22-point loss to Gran Canaria in 1998 (85-107) and another 22-point defeat to Unicaja Malaga in last season’s playoffs (59-81).
Following the final whistle, numerous white handkerchiefs were waved from the stands and on the court, accompanied by jeers.
“We played, by far, our worst game of the season in the ACB. We embarrassed ourselves; it was a catastrophic game on all levels,” stated coach Xavi Pascual. “The importance of this game was paramount, and instead of propelling us forward, it completely and inexplicably blocked us. We’ve been in this profession for years, and sometimes unexpected things happen. Today, no one understands what happened. It seems that every time we arrive at Palau, after several days without playing here, we collapse. This has happened to us several times this season. We start poorly, we lose our footing, and then we don’t know how to react. The opponent gains confidence and extends their lead.”
Valencia’s victory has pushed Barcelona down to fifth place in the standings. This position means they will face UCAM Murcia in the quarterfinals, with the crucial deciding game likely to be played away. Furthermore, if Barcelona manages to advance, they are projected to meet Real Madrid in the semifinals, again without home-court advantage.
