Vassilis Spanoulis Steps Down as AS Monaco Coach Amidst Club Turmoil

Following several days of persistent rumors, AS Monaco officially announced the departure of its head coach, Vassilis Spanoulis, in a press release issued this Wednesday. Exhausted by the financial difficulties and internal tensions plaguing the Principality club, the Greek basketball legend decided to resign. AS Monaco, currently facing serious challenges, was unable to retain him.

Having arrived in Monaco in November 2024, the 43-year-old coach had led ASM to a historic Euroleague final and the French Championship title in 2025, marking a period of significant success. He will, however, retain his position as the head coach of the Greek national team.

The primary question now looming is whether AS Monaco will be able to complete the current season, given the extent of the crisis.

But it’s not just about basketball. Vassilis has been an source of inspiration for everyone within the club, and I can say that I have personally learned a lot working alongside him.

I wish we could have accomplished even more together, but sometimes, circumstances force you to make difficult and painful decisions. I am sure that Vassilis leaves Monaco with many positive memories and, most importantly, with the respect of everyone who worked with him and all the Roca Team fans. »
