Preview NZ vs SA 2026: Wiaan Mulder Replaces Injured Eathan Bosch for T20I Series

South Africa has announced a change to their squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, with all-rounder Eathan Bosch sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Wiaan Mulder, another versatile all-rounder, has been named as his replacement in the 15-member Proteas squad. The series is set to commence on March 15.

Bosch, who has limited international experience with just one ODI appearance a year ago, was expected to make his T20I debut during this tour. Unfortunately, the injury prevents him from seizing this crucial opportunity.

In contrast, Wiaan Mulder brings more international experience to the team, having played 11 T20Is for South Africa. His last T20I appearance was against Ireland in September 2024, and he recently featured in a Test match in India last year.

The South African squad’s journey to New Zealand will be staggered. Players currently in South Africa are slated to depart on March 8. The remaining squad members and support staff, who were in Kolkata following their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, will travel directly to New Zealand on the same day.

Their stay in Kolkata was a consequence of temporary airspace closures over parts of West Asia due to military conflicts, which disrupted standard travel routes. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has arranged charter flights for affected teams, including England and West Indies, to depart from India this weekend.

Keshav Maharaj will captain the South African side for the T20I series. The five matches will be hosted across various New Zealand venues: Mount Maunganui (March 15), Hamilton (March 17), Auckland (March 20), Wellington (March 22), and Christchurch (March 25). Each match day will feature a double-header, with the men’s T20I game following the women’s match at the same venue.
