Preview Francesco Totti Nears Director Role Return at Roma

Reports indicate that Francesco Totti is on the verge of returning to AS Roma in a directorial position. Crucial discussions concerning the potential appointment of the legendary Giallorossi figure are anticipated in the coming days.

Totti’s Potential Hands-On Return to Roma

A return for Totti to Roma has been a topic of discussion throughout the 2025-26 season. While initial ideas suggested an ambassadorial role leading up to the club’s centenary, the latest information points towards a more operational and hands-on involvement, as desired by Gian Piero Gasperini.

Totti dedicated his entire illustrious playing career to the Stadio Olimpico and briefly served as an executive after retiring in 2017. However, he departed after two years, feeling his contributions were not properly valued and that he was treated more like a figurehead.

This situation may soon be rectified. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gasperini is advocating for Totti’s return in a practical directorial role. The aim is for the former captain to be involved in evaluating players and new acquisitions, acting as a liaison between the players and the club’s management.

Claudio Ranieri was initially considered for this role during the 2025-26 season but has since left the club following a public disagreement with the head coach. Additionally, Sporting Director Frederic Massara has recently departed, creating a need for Roma to appoint one or two new directors before the start of the 2026-27 season.

Tony D’Amico, Gasperini’s former colleague at Atalanta, is expected to succeed Massara as sporting director. It is increasingly likely that Totti will join them in a significant executive capacity at the Giallorossi.
