Alexander Manninger, a former goalkeeper for Juventus and Arsenal, has tragically died at the age of 48 following a car accident on Thursday morning.

The ex-Austria international was involved in a fatal collision with a train at a level crossing without barriers. Reports from Austrian media indicate the incident occurred around 8:20 AM. Manninger was driving a minivan, and it remains unclear if the warning signals at the crossing were active at the time of the crash.

Emergency services arrived promptly, but Manninger was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the approximately 25 passengers and the driver of the train involved in the accident were unharmed.

Both the English Football Association and RB Salzburg, one of Manninger’s former clubs, have confirmed his passing. RB Salzburg expressed their sorrow, stating, “We join in mourning our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically passed away in a road accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Alexander.”

Manninger’s last interview was given to La Gazzetta dello Sport just a few days prior to his death. Throughout his career, he made 137 Serie A appearances for clubs including Juventus, Torino, Siena, Bologna, and Fiorentina, winning the Scudetto with Juventus in the 2011-12 season. He also had 64 appearances for Arsenal, where he was part of the squad that won the Premier League title in the 1997-98 season.
