Referee Independence Crucial for Football Integrity, Says FFF Official

Benoît Bastien, the assistant technical director of refereeing at the French Football Federation (FFF), stressed the importance of referees remaining independent and free from the influence of club presidents or officials. His remarks came in response to comments made by Olivier Létang, president of Lille, who had criticized referees. Létang himself faced sanctions for his statements.

Last August, following a match between Lille and PSG, Létang publicly criticized what he termed the "lightness and lack of discernment in the choice of referees." He had previously sent an email to the technical director of refereeing and FFF/LFP officials stating he could no longer accept their club being officiated by a particular referee, Eric Wattellier. Létang warned that if this referee were assigned to another Lille match, the club would reserve the right not to participate or organize the game. Létang had already served a two-month suspension for prior remarks about Wattellier and received a 20,000-euro fine from the Professional Football League's disciplinary committee.

Bastien stated on RMC's 'L'After Foot' that refereeing must remain impartial. "If refereeing loses its independence, as happens in some countries, we no longer have the same football, and the consequences would be much more severe," he explained. He affirmed that the FFF manages refereeing according to FIFA's charter, assigning officials based solely on sporting merit and performance, and that they face no undue pressure.

"Any referee can officiate Lille's matches," Bastien added.

Following this incident, Létang decided to withdraw from meetings concerning refereeing, believing such discussions were unproductive. He expressed in an email to the refereeing management and league officials that his efforts to improve football were not being heard, and that the exchanges lacked transparency and effectiveness, making him feel they were wasting time.

Bastien also emphasized the educational role referees play on the field. "What drives us is the pedagogical aspect," he said. "We simply want to explain things to calm or pacify, or the reverse. The goal is to explain the reasoning behind a decision and what is expected. We listen to and study everything. Two things are fundamental: the correctness of the decision and the control of a match. That's what we expect from a referee today. This human element is fundamental."

Importance of Referee Independence

Benoît Bastien, the assistant technical director of refereeing at the French Football Federation (FFF), highlighted the critical need for referee independence. He responded to pressure from club presidents, like Lille's Olivier Létang, asserting that football's integrity depends on unbiased officiating. Bastien stated that if refereeing succumbs to pressure from club officials, the quality and fairness of the sport would diminish significantly. He confirmed that referee assignments are based purely on performance criteria and that the FFF does not yield to external influence. Bastien also underscored the educational aspect of refereeing, where officials explain their decisions to foster understanding and maintain control during matches.
