Hemos sido críticos con las controvertidas acciones de Microsoft y Xbox en los últimos años. Nos hemos manifestado contra sus numerosos despidos, su involucramiento con la inteligencia artificial generativa, el incremento en el precio de Game Pass y, crucialmente, su respaldo a Israel en el conflicto contra el pueblo palestino. Por ello, celebramos la postura del estudio independiente holandés Speculative Agency, creadores del juego All Will Rise, quienes decidieron devolver la financiación recibida de Microsoft como parte de su apoyo al boicot contra la corporación.

All Will Rise es un RPG de construcción de mazos donde los jugadores lideran un grupo en una misión para encarcelar a un multimillonario responsable de la devastación de un río.

Speculative Agency había financiado su proyecto a través de Kickstarter y también aceptó asistencia económica de empresas como Microsoft. Sin embargo, al unirse a la campaña de boicot “No Games For Genocide” —que busca concienciar sobre el apoyo de Microsoft a las acciones de Israel y promover un boicot para que la compañía retire dicho apoyo—, el estudio rescindió su contrato con Microsoft. Esto implicó la búsqueda de fuentes alternativas de financiación para completar el juego y la aceptación de la pérdida de la base de usuarios de Xbox. A pesar de estos desafíos, Speculative Agency considera que la situación humanitaria actual justifica plenamente su decisión.

Dada la esencia anticapitalista y revolucionaria de All Will Rise, la decisión del estudio de rechazar la financiación de Microsoft es un acto de coherencia ideológica, evitando cualquier percepción de hipocresía.

Indie Studio All Will Rise Returns Microsoft Funding in Protest

We have been critical of Microsoft’s and Xbox’s controversial actions in recent years. We have spoken out against their numerous layoffs, their involvement with generative artificial intelligence, the increase in Game Pass prices, and crucially, their backing of Israel in the conflict against the Palestinian people. Therefore, we commend the stance of the Dutch independent studio Speculative Agency, creators of the game All Will Rise, who decided to return the funding received from Microsoft as part of their support for the boycott against the corporation.

All Will Rise is a deck-building RPG where players lead a group on a mission to imprison a billionaire responsible for the devastation of a river.

Speculative Agency had funded its project through Kickstarter and also accepted financial assistance from companies like Microsoft. However, upon joining the “No Games For Genocide” boycott campaign — which aims to raise awareness about Microsoft’s support for Israel’s actions and promote a boycott to compel the company to withdraw that support — the studio terminated its contract with Microsoft. This entailed seeking alternative funding sources to complete the game and accepting the loss of the Xbox user base. Despite these challenges, Speculative Agency believes that the current humanitarian situation fully justifies their decision.

Given the anti-capitalist and revolutionary essence of All Will Rise, the studio’s decision to reject Microsoft’s funding is an act of ideological consistency, avoiding any perception of hypocrisy.
