The Belgian Cats, led by Julie Allemand, are showcasing outstanding results. At a tournament in China, they dominated opponents, winning by an average margin of 31 points, including a convincing 80-65 victory over China. Despite a long journey and time zone changes, their efficiency remained unaffected. The team demonstrated a remarkable average of 31.2 assists per game, and against South Sudan, they set a new World Cup qualification record with 40 assists.
Julie Allemand, a former point guard from the French championship, was named the tournament’s MVP. It’s also worth noting the significant contribution from bench players, who averaged 38 points per game, even with minor injuries to Billie Massey and Bethy Mununga.
Following a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Tenerife and a similar result at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Belgians are now aiming for a World Championship podium finish in Berlin.
“We have shown that we can beat anyone. We are no longer outsiders. If everyone is at their best, we can dream big,” stated Julie Allemand.
However, similar to the French national team, the Belgians’ preparation for major tournaments may depend on the WNBA schedule. Emma Meesseman warned: “If, before the World Cup, we can only train together for one week while other teams have six weeks, the difference will be evident.”
