French player Carla Leite was instrumental in Portland’s win against New York, showcasing an exceptional performance. In just 22 minutes on the court, she converted 8 out of 14 field goal attempts, including one successful three-pointer out of two. This impressive showing contributes to her season averages of 15.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists over the first five games of the season.
Despite a strong effort from New York’s Breanna Stewart, who recorded 25 points, 17 rebounds, three steals, and a block, her team couldn’t secure the win. The Liberty struggled with turnovers, committing four in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter, leading to a total of 19. A 10-point lead dwindled to a single point on multiple occasions before Portland, the Fire, took control of the game with 3 minutes and 36 seconds remaining and never relinquished their advantage.
Fellow French players also made significant contributions. Marine Johannès delivered several spectacular three-point shots, totaling 17 points. She also executed a masterful no-look, behind-the-head assist to Jonquel Jones, who scored with a foul. Pauline Astier added to the team’s effort with 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
