Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is getting closer to breaking Wayne Gretzky`s record for the most goals in NHL history. In a recent game against the Winnipeg Jets, Ovechkin scored his 889th career goal.
He now needs only six more goals to pass Gretzky`s record of 894.
Many hockey fans are wondering if Ovechkin will break the record before this season ends. According to statistical projections, there`s about a 73% chance he will do it this season.
These projections suggest Ovechkin is likely to break the record between April 14th and 17th. There`s around a 15% chance he could break it as early as April 12th against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and about a 14% chance on April 13th, also against Columbus. There`s also nearly a 14% chance he could break it on April 15th against the New York Islanders.
Ovechkin has scored three goals in his last five games, scoring in every other game. He has scored six goals in total during March.
This season, Ovechkin has 36 goals and 24 assists and is aiming to score 40 goals for the third time in the last four seasons.
The Capitals are also competing for the top spot in the league. As Washington aims for the best position in the Eastern Conference playoffs, Ovechkin should have plenty of opportunities to score goals in the remaining weeks of the season.
