According to multiple reports, Napoli is close to finalizing a deal to sign American international Yunus Musah from AC Milan for approximately $25 million. Musah, set to turn 23 this year, arrived at AC Milan in the summer of 2023 from Valencia, joining his USMNT teammate Christian Pulisic. However, his impact at the club hasn`t matched Pulisic`s so far. Napoli is reportedly prepared to offer Musah a contract, with a potential summer move to the side managed by Antonio Conte. This scenario is seen as beneficial for both the player and the United States Men`s National Team, who need Musah performing at his best leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Musah`s two years at AC Milan included inconsistent periods, making a total of 80 appearances across all competitions. The lack of stability, including three managerial changes during his tenure, may have contributed to things not unfolding as planned.

Upon his arrival in Serie A, then-AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli viewed Musah as a versatile midfielder capable of playing various roles. However, Pioli departed after one season, and the club appointed Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca. Subsequent instability followed, and the 2024-25 season concluded with the Italian club finishing in 8th place, missing out on European competition the following year.

During his two years at AC Milan, Musah featured in numerous midfield positions, including central midfield, right-central midfield, and occasionally even wider roles like attacking winger or right back. While this versatility allowed him to accumulate 80 appearances, it also seemed to prevent him from establishing himself as a consistent starter in a single, preferred role within the team.

This is where a potential move to Napoli under Antonio Conte`s guidance could be crucial for Musah`s development. He appears to need a coach who will place faith in him for a specific midfield role and provide the consistent game time necessary to become a regular starter. Napoli, competing in the Champions League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia next season, will require squad rotation, offering Musah opportunities. His prior European experience could be valuable to Conte during a busy schedule. Napoli`s reported decision to sign Musah, rather than making Philip Billing`s loan permanent (a player used for rotation this season), signals significant trust from both the club and Conte that Musah can elevate his game. If anyone can facilitate that step, it`s arguably Conte. Only time will confirm if this was the correct move, but success would undoubtedly represent an upgrade not just for Napoli and the player, but also for the USMNT as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
