Former world number one Victoria Azarenka has offered her perspective on reforming the anti-doping system within professional tennis.

Speaking specifically about a recent case, Azarenka shared her personal view of Jannik Sinner: “I personally really like Jannik. I think he`s a great guy. He`s always been very kind to me and gives the impression of being a very humble person. I can`t say I know him well, but I can`t criticize him in that regard.”

However, from a professional standpoint, Azarenka stated, “I believe there are inconsistencies – I don`t believe all players are treated equally. It`s not just about his situation. Many questions arise regarding how everything was conducted.”

She pointed out a significant challenge: “We are subject to WADA, which complicates the introduction of certain rules. Either we should leave the Olympic system – I don`t think that`s a bad option.”

Azarenka emphasized the focus should be on fair application: “We are often asked: `What do you think about this?` But actually, what I think about it isn`t important. What is important is whether the rules are applied equally. Do they need to be changed? In my opinion, we should be discussing improvements more.”

Discussing the lack of public information in certain cases, like Jannik Sinner`s, Azarenka noted, “In Jannik Sinner`s case, people ask why no one knew about anything. There is a legal side; I understand that. But it`s already a bit on the edge. In my opinion, there should be more honesty. A big problem is that we are subject to WADA, and WADA has certain timelines when they can change rules.”

“I don`t have all the answers, but there are questions worth asking – and seeing if it makes sense,” Azarenka concluded during her press conference after her opening win in Rome.

Beyond anti-doping, the Belarusian player also commented on the Tour`s demanding schedule.

“I worry primarily not for myself, but for young players, because it will be much harder for them to play as much as I have, for over 20 years. Therefore, I think we should also talk about how balls and surfaces have changed over the years. We need a more predictable schedule – so players can prepare, fans know when to watch, and business can plan everything more easily.”
