Preview USWNT U-23 Team Gathers Rising Stars for Training Camp

Following Emma Hayes` announcement of the senior team roster for the Brazil friendlies in April, a U23 squad has also been named for a training camp. This camp will occur at the same time as the senior team`s international matches. Hayes has been publicly discussing her commitment to revitalizing the U.S. Soccer U23 program.

In January, a `Futures Camp` marked the program`s restart, bringing together a group of eligible young players in Florida. Several participants from this January camp have since been included in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup roster and the recent April roster for the Brazil friendlies.

Lisa Cole, the lead scout for the WNT player pathway, will oversee the U23 camps. Hayes and her staff will be present to observe the U23 training sessions throughout the week. The U23 assistant coaches include Heather Dyche (head coach, University of New Mexico), Yolanda Thomas (assistant coach, Orlando Pride), and Louis Hunt (goalkeeper coach).

Cole stated that Emma Hayes has consistently emphasized the need to focus more on this age group. The goal is to provide young professional and top college players with increased national team environment playing opportunities and more chances to compete with and against each other.

Having both the U-23 and WNT camps at the same training site simultaneously offers a valuable opportunity. Both coaching staffs can observe both sets of players, gaining a firsthand understanding of the camp environment and the requirements for performing at the international level. This is a great opportunity for both the players and the coaches.

Several players on the U23 roster are already playing professionally. Eva Gaetino (Paris Saint-Germain) is back in the squad, along with Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC) and Savy King (Angel City FC) in the defense. Forwards Reilyn Turner (Portland Thorns FC), Jameese Joseph (Chicago Stars FC), and Sarah Schupansky (Gotham FC) are all coming off recent starts with their NWSL clubs.
