Ilia Topuria`s anticipated return to the lightweight division encountered a slight moment of confusion during the official weigh-ins.
The former featherweight champion was the initial fighter to step onto the scale Friday morning for the UFC 317 event. He appeared confident that he would easily meet the 155-pound weight requirement. However, when Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Jeff Mullen announced his weight, he initially stated 155.5 pounds, which is above the maximum allowed weight for a lightweight championship contest.
Initially, there seemed to be no reaction from anyone, and Topuria performed a customary pose after stepping off the scale. He was then instructed to remain on the scale. Mullen returned, made an adjustment to the scale, and clarified his previous statement, saying, “155, I misspoke.”
Shortly after this incident, Saturday`s main event, the lightweight championship fight, was officially confirmed. Charles Oliveira also successfully made weight, coming in slightly under the limit at 154.5 pounds. Topuria and Oliveira are competing for the title recently vacated by Islam Makhachev, the number one pound-for-pound fighter, who is reportedly moving up to the welterweight division to challenge champion Jack Della Maddalena.
Backup fighter Arman Tsarukyan also successfully made the lightweight limit, weighing in at 155 pounds.
For the co-main event, both the reigning flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja and his challenger Kai Kara-France successfully made the required 125-pound weight, each weighing in at precisely 125 pounds.
One significant change for the card was announced during Friday`s weigh-ins: a preliminary bout between Christopher Ewert and Jackson McVey was canceled. Ewert had accepted the fight on short notice, stepping in for Sedriques Dumas. However, officials announced at the start of the morning`s weigh-ins that Ewert had been removed from the fight due to issues during his weight cut.
