Thomas Partey is reportedly favoring an extension to his contract at Arsenal, despite attracting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Spain. While his departure from the Emirates Stadium was somewhat expected this summer upon his contract`s expiry, manager Mikel Arteta recently indicated that Arsenal is open to offering a new deal to the midfielder, who turns 32 in June.

Interest in Partey comes from Saudi Arabian teams, along with Juventus and Barcelona. He is also understood to be a target for his former club, Atletico Madrid, whom he left in 2020 for Arsenal. Since his move, he has faced challenges with injuries but has recently shown impressive form. This return to form is believed to have prompted renewed discussions regarding his future at the club.

Despite Partey`s inclination to stay, an extension is far from guaranteed. Arsenal is reportedly looking for terms that would secure his presence for the upcoming season, with an option for an additional twelve months. Partey has not dismissed this structure, but the financial terms, particularly his salary, are a key factor. He currently earns over $250,000 per week, placing him among the highest earners at the Emirates. Sources suggest Arsenal would aim for a lower base salary in any new agreement.

Furthermore, Partey`s role in the first team could potentially diminish. According to sources, Arsenal remains confident in their pursuit of Real Sociedad`s Martin Zubimendi, having worked on the potential arrival of the Spanish international throughout the current season. While Real Madrid has also been linked with Zubimendi, there is optimism in North London that Arsenal will successfully sign him.

When asked about the progress of Partey`s contract situation last week, Arteta stated: “There is progress with all the players. I`ll leave that to [sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and to talk about.”

With Zubimendi potentially arriving and Partey`s future uncertain but leaning towards extension, fellow defensive midfielder Jorginho is expected to depart when his contract ends. The Italy international has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia but is reportedly preferring clubs in Brazil, with Flamengo often mentioned. A recent rib injury could impact the remainder of the season for the 33-year-old, who has garnered significant admiration at Arsenal for his influence both on and off the pitch.
