Two prominent figures in golf have joined forces to present a novel experience for sports enthusiasts. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are the visionaries behind TGL, an engaging, technology-driven golf league.
In collaboration with the PGA Tour, the league offers an unprecedented format where fans can intimately witness elite golfers competing in a specially designed arena.
Here is more detailed information about TGL:
What is TGL Golf?
Established in August 2022, TGL is a technologically advanced, 3-on-3 golf league. It includes six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour golfers, participating in two-hour matches at the SoFi Center, TGL`s bespoke venue located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
What Does TGL Stand For?
TGL is an acronym for Tomorrow`s Golf League. The name originates from TMRW Sports, a company founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. This venture focuses on creating technology-based innovations within the sports and entertainment sectors.
How Do TGL Matches Work?
Each TGL match is divided into two segments. The first is `Triples,` a nine-hole, 3-on-3 alternate shot format. The second segment, `Singles,` features head-to-head competition over six holes, with each golfer playing two holes during this session.
- The course inside SoFi Center is equipped with various technologies and spans approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, about the size of a football field.
- Golfers tee off from genuine grass tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand, hitting towards a massive simulation screen that is over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
- The tech-enhanced green incorporates mechanisms that alter the slope, providing varied gameplay on every TGL hole.
- Each hole is worth one point. If teams are tied after regulation play, an overtime period decides the winner.
- Overtime: TGL`s overtime is similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until one team places two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
- Shot clock: Every match includes a 40-second shot clock. Players must take their shot within this time; failure to do so results in a shot clock violation and a one-stroke penalty for their team.
- The 40-second limit is based on the USGA`s recommendations for pace of play.
- Timeouts: Each team gets four timeouts per match, with two per session. Timeouts not used in the first session do not carry over. For the team about to play, timeouts can be called anytime before the shot clock expires. The opposing team can call a timeout until the player has addressed the ball. Teams cannot call consecutive timeouts on the same shot.
- Referee: A referee is present on the course to enforce TGL rules, and another official monitors from a booth.
- All golfers wear microphones during matches to enhance fan engagement with the action.
Each TGL event is designed to complement the PGA Tour schedule as part of their partnership. Weekly matches lead to playoffs, culminating in one team winning the SoFi Cup.
What is the Points System in TGL?
Mirroring the NHL, TGL uses a points system for regular-season matches. Teams can earn up to two points per match, which determine their position in the SoFi Cup standings.
A win in regulation or overtime earns two points, while a loss in overtime earns one point.
The top four teams proceed to the playoffs, which include a single-elimination semifinal and a best-of-three championship series.
