Preview Tare Discusses USMNT Duo Pulisic & Musah at AC Milan

Following a season where AC Milan failed to qualify for European competitions, the club initiated a new phase this summer by appointing Igli Tare as sporting director. They also welcomed back Massimiliano Allegri as manager, who previously coached the team from 2010 to 2014, securing a Serie A title in 2010-11. Speaking ahead of the new season, Tare discussed the summer transfer plans, specifically mentioning American players Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic.

Addressing the situation of Yunus Musah, who is reportedly close to leaving this summer, Tare clarified the club`s stance. He stated, “I view Musah as a superb player, however, we are seeking players with specific qualities that align with the plan we have developed with coach Allegri. Our focus is on finding deep-lying midfielders suitable for a three-player midfield setup. Musah does not possess these particular attributes. While he can operate in both two or three-man midfields, his profile differs. This is the primary reason we are looking to make changes.”

Tare outlined further transfer targets, adding, “We plan to bring in another midfielder in addition to a striker. We will also acquire a right-back and a left-back. Should any players be sold, we are prepared to strengthen the winger and central defense roles. This includes attacking wingers. Our priority is to ensure the team is as strong as possible and competes at the highest level.”

In stark contrast to Musah, Christian Pulisic`s position at the club appears secure. Both Tare and Allegri regard the American winger as a vital component of their future plans. Tare commented, “Pulisic is set to be a crucial player next season. I will discuss his contract extension with CEO Giorgio Furlani when appropriate, but currently, our focus is entirely on the team. I believe he was among our most impactful players last season and will be a cornerstone for the upcoming campaign; he holds a central position within the squad.”

During his two seasons at AC Milan, Musah was deployed in various midfield roles, including central midfield, right-central midfield, and occasionally wider positions or even right-back. While this versatility contributed to his 80 appearances, it arguably prevented him from establishing himself as a consistent key player. Pulisic, however, proved highly effective, contributing 17 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, marking him as one of the team`s standout performers last season. As he looks towards the 2026 World Cup, missing out on European club competition this season is not an ideal scenario for the US international.
