Zalgiris extended their home winning streak to seven games, improving their record to 21 wins and 14 losses, now surpassing FC Barcelona (20 wins, 15 losses). The closely contested match against Barcelona took a decisive turn when Sylvain Francisco stepped up to take control.
Barcelona had effectively contained the French international for much of the game, often double-teaming him and leveraging the size of Tomas Satoransky as their primary defensive asset to slow him down. Despite the pressure, Francisco still managed to deliver 6 assists in the first half, maintaining his effectiveness in other aspects of the game. The tide began to turn when Satoransky left the court with 4 minutes and 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter and was unable to return for the second half.
It was then that Sylvain Francisco sank his first three-pointer, arcing over Miles Norris, and the floodgates opened.
« It was extremely difficult; they were pressing me constantly, » Francisco stated. « It was very hard to find my rhythm, but I felt that the slightest opportunity to do something would be decisive. When there were two seconds left and I took that shot, and it went in, I knew it was over. »
Francisco then followed up with three more three-pointers as Zalgiris ramped up their defensive interceptions. Ultimately, he scored all of his crucial 14 points in the final eight minutes of the game. For the second consecutive season, Francisco’s late fourth-quarter heroics proved decisive in Zalgiris’s victory over Barcelona.
« It shows what kind of player he is. He was patient, » commented Zalgiris coach Tomas Masiulis. « In the beginning, the whole team was trying to neutralize him, and Barcelona has many great guards, so it wasn’t easy. But most importantly, he was patient, and in crucial moments, he made the right decisions and hit his shots. He moved the ball and involved all his teammates. »
